A massive extrasolar object is detected inbound from the Kuiper Belt. Composed of extraordinarily heavy elements, The Colossus is determined to be an ideal counterweight for the nearly complete PLAN space elevator. Despite protests, China claims the asteroid for itself and redirects it towards the Earth.
As a challenge to the claim, a US Navy carrier strike group departs its station in the Middle East, intent on conducting a Freedom of Navigation patrol through waters now claimed by the Republic of Riau. When the carrier group exits the Strait of Malacca six days later, an unprecedented Air-Sea battle begins. Missiles surge over the horizon, directed by 6th-generation air dominance fighters to warships, maritime militia vessels, marine contingency stations, and forward operating bases. Semi-autonomous fleets of UAS, unmanned aerial systems, and loitering munitions saturate targets with electronic attacks before spearing each with decisive kinetic effect. Agentic Weapon Systems spear across wireless datalinks, hunting for systems to subvert. Hardened Command and Control systems are poisoned with false contacts and viruses while kill webs tighten around them in the Strait and beyond. |
72 hours later, the fighting stalls out. Advanced munitions stores are depleted, with the few remaining craft limping towards one of the handful of ports that have survived.
Critical infrastructure burns, interrupting signals from directional capture arrays on burning telemetry platforms. In orbit, China loses control. The Colossus' trajectory slips into a collision course with the surface. Asteroid fragments tumult into a spindrift of debris, raining down over a 250-kilometer area. Crashing into the ocean, the ensuing tsunami erases coastlines and entire island chains in minutes. Without missing a beat, a singular heavy weather event unlike anything seen on Earth begins to churn. An elliptical cyclone forms over the region. Simmering between a Cat 4 and Cat 5 hurricane, the storm is named the Paracletus. Fed by the mass evaporation of warm ocean water from the impacts, the storm hides hundreds of impact craters, severely contaminated with decaying unstable heavy elements. Paracletus consumes functional landmass and infrastructure throughout the South Pacific and Indian Ocean, smashing surface and subsurface maritime traffic. |

Now a permanent fixture of the region, Paracletus churns. Within the Paracletus, sea states remain high, with wave crests typically exceeding 45 feet. On its fringes, the storm dissipates from hurricane conditions into more manageable moderate sea states.
With radioactivity mostly held at levels safe for temporary habitation, it is along this boundary that national and corporate powers reassert their presence. Shorelines throughout the Indo-Pacific have been destroyed by tsunami and remain underwater. Attempts to rebuild fixed infrastructure in even remote edges of the storm front have been abandoned after unpredictable swells from the storm have repeatedly destroyed what little progress was made. Despite these challenges, demand for the riches within the stormwall remains unabated. From ports outside the affected areas of the Paracletus, specialized heavy weather vessels, crewed primarily by robots, are regularly dispatched into the storm to recover exceptionally mineral-rich fragments of The Colossus. With precious few surface warships remaining to protect these missions, Marine Contingency Platforms become a critical feature to ensure continuity of regional exploitation. |
Where other arcologies have failed, the MCP have proven to be durable. Hosting tactical, search-and-rescue, and supply/repair crews, the stations also have short term storage for recovered ores and minerals from within the storm wall. While production of new stations are ongoing, there are presently only 9 seaworthy platforms operational in the region.
With both USN and PNLAN forces severely limited by casualties suffered during the Paracletus event and the 72-Hour War, Private Military Contractors (PMC) Anchorage and Hankou, act as lethal surrogates for the now limping Super Powers, conducting sea denial missions formerly the exclusive purview of their state clients. "Stand-In" troops, PMC Multi-Function Response Teams operate in compact hyper-lethal elements. With significant organic capabilities including CCT, "one-way" unmanned kinetic systems, and AI-enabled counter-reconnaissance technologies—these forces are built to respond to contingencies across the entire competition spectrum, extending the battlespace deep into adversary-held territory. |
